Hospitals and clinicians are required to make available patient data via application programming interfaces (APIs). According to a proposed rule published in March, HL7’s Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) will be the required API. Specifically, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) has proposed requiring various FHIR releases; however, many in the industry (including CHIME) are supporting Release 4, the American National Standard Institute’s approved standard, as many in the industry believe Release 4 will better support interoperability. This proposal builds on existing requirements that you deploy APIs as part of your 2015 Certification, a requirement that became effective this year.
