Clearwater Compliance Offers a One-on-One Conversation with Former Office for Civil Rights Director Leon Rodriguez
WASHINGTON, DC & NASHVILLE, TN – April 17, 2017– The first one-on-one conversation and Q&A session with former Office for Civil Rights Director Leon Rodriguez since he left the US government will be offered to health system and hospital leaders on May 3rd at noon ET. Rodriguez, now a partner at law firm Seyfarth Shaw LLP, will participate in a complimentary webinar, “What OCR Expects in Your HIPAA Risk Analysis: A Conversation with Former OCR Director Leon Rodriguez,” hosted by Bob Chaput, chief executive officer of Clearwater Compliance. This session will offer counsel on adopting the best approach to cybersecurity and HIPAA compliance and provide a perspective on the new Administration’s expected plans, audit enforcement strategies and policies as well as OCR’s emerging standard of care in performing risk analysis.
For 90 minutes, healthcare leaders will receive an insider perspective on key topics such as:
- What OCR expects in your HIPAA risk analysis
- How to conduct an OCR-quality risk analysis
- How to help covered entities and business associates understand and act on the specific Risk Analysis requirements included in the HIPAA Security Rule
- How, when and if to use Attorney-Client Privilege (ACP) when conducting a risk analysis
- The importance of risk analysis in operationalizing a cybersecurity strategy
- What to expect from the new administration on HIPAA
“The healthcare industry had gone from little to no enforcement until Rodriguez stepped in and reshaped the US government’s role in implementing more robust enforcement,” said Bob Chaput, CEO of Clearwater Compliance. “Prior to Rodriguez, enforcement of patient privacy and security issues was often complaint-driven and reactionary, even after a breach. The tone shifted when Rodriguez began as OCR director in 2011; he was the first director to bring real focus to HIPAA privacy and security issues.”
Rodriguez was the leading advocate at OCR for clarifying HIPAA compliance strategy for healthcare providers. Under Rodriguez, OCR refocused its enforcement in pursuit of what he called “high-impact cases” and emphasized that covered entities (CEs) and business associates (BAs) face sanctions on all lapses discovered during an investigation, regardless of whether they are directly related to the incident that sparked OCR’s attention.
