Fujifilm’s Synapse PACS is First System Granted Authority to Operate Under New US DoD Process
STAMFORD, CT – June 19, 2017 — FUJIFILM Medical Systems USA, Inc., a leading provider of diagnostic imaging products and medical informatics solutions, today announced that its Synapse PACS line has been granted Authority to Operate (ATO) on networks in the US Department of Defense (DoD), making Fujifilm the first vendor with a networked medical system to attain a Risk Management Framework (RFM)-based ATO.
“This particular ATO is an unprecedented achievement in that our technology had to stand up to the rigors of a brand new risk management framework process recently implemented by the Department of Defense,” said Johann Fernando, Ph.D, Chief Operating Officer, FUJIFILM Medical Systems USA, Inc. “The fact that Fujifilm is the very first vendor to meet these new challenges speaks to our unrivalled history of innovation, flexibility and stringent security standards.”
In the past year, the DoD transitioned from its traditional DIACAP process to a new RMF process for evaluating technologies and determining ATO status. The new process contains thousands of changes and generally takes over a year to complete.
The Risk Management Framework provides a process that integrates security and risk management activities into the system development life cycle. The risk-based approach to security control selection and specification considers effectiveness, efficiency, and constraints due to applicable laws, directives, Executive Orders, policies, standards, or regulations.
After completing a thorough security assessment, the DoD determined that Fujifilm’s Synapse PACS line meets its controls for RMF including the DoD 8500 Series controls and the Security and Technical Implementation Guides (STIG) requirements. The new ATO granted to Fujifilm is valid until March 2020.
“This latest ATO from the Department of Defense is testimony to the fact that risk mitigation remains a top priority at Fujifilm,” said Bill Lacy, Vice President of Medical Informatics at FUJIFILM Medical Systems USA, Inc. “We look forward to our continued strong relationship with the DoD.”
