How to be an Effective Cybersecurity Leader March 5, 8:15 a.m.
Karl West
Karl J. West is the chief information security officer and assistant vice president of information systems for Intermountain Healthcare, an integrated delivery network (IDN) based in Salt Lake City, Utah. As Intermountain’s CISO, West is responsible for Information access, authorization, privacy, business continuity and data governance. He leads the planning, development and implementation of Intermountain’s information systems security program to promote information systems reliability and accessibility while protecting and defending against unauthorized access to patient information, clinical systems, networks and data. He has been involved with information technology for the past 25 years. Prior to Intermountain Healthcare, West was a vice president and managing partner in AT&T Consulting Services. He also has a keen interest in the development of new technologies to improve patient care and lower patient costs. He received a BSCS from Brigham Young University and has also received an MBA.
Erik Decker
Erik Decker is the chief information security officer for the University of Chicago Medicine (UCM), and is responsible for the cybersecurity program for the UCM and the clinical operations of the Biological Sciences Division. Prior to his time at UCM, Decker served in a similar role at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, N.Y. He has 17 years of experience in the Information Technology industry, with 11 years focused on information and cybersecurity. As of January 1, he is the new chair of the AEHIS Board and is an active participant in many formal and informal local security associations. He holds a Master of Science in information technology from Loyola University in Chicago and Bachelor’s degree in cell and structural biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Getting Ready for the Next International Cyber-Attack, March 5, 9:30 a.m.
Kris Kusche
Kristopher Kusche joined the Albany Medical Center in 1993 after earning his Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees in biomedical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 2003, after earning certification as a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), he became Albany Medical Center’s first Information System Security Officer tasked with creating its first IT security program. He currently serves as vice president of information services and chief information security officer. In his role, Kusche is responsible for all information security-related operations, including policy management, regulatory assurance, prevention, monitoring and investigation, as well as security program strategy, planning and deployment. He is an expert in biomedical equipment and is responsible for the Albany Medical Center’s Medical Equipment Management Program. In addition to his Albany Medical Center responsibilities, Kusche holds certification as a Certified Professional in Health Information & Management Systems (CPHIMS), is a current HIMSS Fellow, and served on the HIMSS New York State Chapter Board as president, past-president, president-elect, secretary and interim-treasurer.
The Economic Aspects of Cybersecurity, March 5, 10:45 a.m.
Jigar Kadakia
Jigar Kadakia is the chief information security and privacy officer at Partners Health Care. He has more than 17 years of cybersecurity and privacy experience, with a specific focus on healthcare. His experience includes many information systems security disciplines: systems engineering, threat analysis, risk and vulnerability assessments, privacy, Sarbanes-Oxley controls and project management. He is responsible for efforts such as HIPAA/HITECH compliance, Meaningful Use risk compliance, EHR implementations and risk analysis, third party risk management, privacy incident response and analysis, design and implementation of solutions for Partners. Jigar has also presented on cyber security and privacy related topics nationally. Jigar earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering with honors from University of Cincinnati and an MBA from Xavier University.
Evolving Healthcare Cybersecurity Programs with Lessons Learned, March 5, 2:00 p.m.
Dan Bowden
Dan Bowden is the vice president and chief information security officer at Sentara Healthcare, a 12-hospital integrated delivery system. He has spent over 25 years in information security, working across multiple industries. He previously served as the CISO for University of Utah Healthcare. Under his guidance, Sentara Healthcare established a Cyber Students Staffing Program to help pave the way for an anticipated work shortage among cybersecurity experts. Bowden earned an associate’s degree in information systems management from New Mexico State University, a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix, and is in the process of completing a master’s degree in administration of security and justice with a concentration in global and homeland security from the University of Phoenix.
